Since the origin of the ESDP process, the European Union has deployed more than 20 military and civilian operations across the world. The success of those engagements has made it possible for the EU to develop its own politico-military structures as well as innovative means in order to manage complex stabilization operations. However, the specificity of the methods used by the EU to manage conflicts leads to serious misunderstandings. This Focus Paper aims to explain how the wide range of European institutions can contribute to conflict management and to stabilization. Moreover, the author will provide us with some indicators about the way the EU could reinforce its means to take up the future challenges in the field of security.
