This paper analyses the position of women in combat functions within the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces). Does the conveyed image of female soldiers ensuring Israel’s defence accurately reflect reality? In this regard, a historical perspective is necessary but too restricted given the particularly close link between army and society in Israel. In this highly militarised society, the male fighter holds a central position, which can scarcely be reconciled with gender equality. This study is first and foremost a case study of the IDF and the Israeli society. Nevertheless, some links can be made with existing practices in the international military demos, among which Belgian Defence.
