Is it still possible today to conduct C4ISR operations without impacting upon civil networks or infrastructure? The structure on the one hand and the vast array of coupled sensors and platforms on the other hand make it even more complicated: C4ISR genesis arose from military needs but these systems are taking hold in civil society. As a consequence, C4ISR transition transcends technological adaptation. A dynamic and supportive C4ISR cyber-architecture is needed. In part one of this study, we highlight the military origin of the C4ISR revolution and the supporting cyber-dimension. Thereafter, we explore the extra military dimension and the requirements of future theatres of operation. In the last part, we attempt to put forward some recommendations for Belgium.
